KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan will quit politics and give up all party and state government duties.
Dr Chan, who is also Sarawak deputy chief minister, made the decision following his surprise loss to the DAP for the Piasau seat in the state polls on Saturday, according to a report in The Star today.
“I am quitting active politics. I will meet SUPP party leaders on Tuesday. After I have discussed with them in detail about a leadership transition, I will make my announcement,” he was reported as saying.
“It is time to go. Enough of politics. What I hope for is that SUPP will be in good hands and that the party will continue to play a role in serving the people in Sarawak.”
Dr Chan (picture) also told the English daily he bore no ill-will towards constituents who voted for the DAP after supporting him for 30 years.
“I don’t blame anyone and there is no bitterness in my heart,” he said.
He added that he would continue to be in Miri and try to help the city in another capacity.
“I love Miri. This election result will not decrease my love for Miri and its people,” Dr Chan said.
SUPP, which claims to represent the state’s Chinese community, suffered an embarrassing defeat on Saturday when it lost to the DAP in 12 mostly Chinese-majority seats.
When the results were announced, SUPP, the oldest party in Sarawak, found it had only won six of the 19 state seats it contested.
Only two were Chinese-majority seats while the remaining four were Dayak-majority constituencies.
The outcome for SUPP mirrors that of coalition partner MCA in the Election 2008 “political tsunami”, which saw the peninsula Chinese party’s parliamentary representation cut by half from 31 to 15 seats.
SUPP’s biggest blow on Saturday was dealt when Dr Chan was toppled by political newcomer Ling Sie Kiong from the DAP.
The 75-year-old Dr Chan was defeated by 1,590 votes by first-time contender Ling, a lawyer less than half his age.

PRN ELECTION SARAWAK - George Chan has a succession plan .. What about Lim Kit Siang ??

MIRI: SUPP president Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, a favourite target of the DAP, says he has a succession plan while the Opposition party has none.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the DAP should look at its own backyard before poking its nose into the internal affairs of another party.

"Did (DAP Advisor) Lim Kit Siang tell us about his succession plan? How about Karpal (Singh) and the Chongs?," he asked, referring to Sarawak DAP founder Chong Siew and his son, state party secretary Chieng Jien.

"We never ask about their succession plan because we all know that theirs is a dynasty. We don't have a dynasty," he said Monday.

Chan has helmed the state Barisan Nasional's second largest party since 1996.

The DAP, which faces SUPP in 15 constituencies, has been targeting Chan's leadership of SUPP in its campaign for the state election on Saturday.

"Of course, I know who is going to succeed me," Chan said.

"The 300 youth leaders that I have will give me an indication whether I am right or not in my choice.

"It is important that they accept him so the party can go full force (forward)," he added.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) conducted an analysis of the contents of the DAP leaders’ ceramah over the past five days and found that they contained “nothing useful” for the rakyat.
SUPP president Tan Sri Dr George Chan said their ceramah speeches were fiery and loud, but had no substance.
“The main focus of all their ceramah was to condemn Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and me.
“They attacked us personally and slandered and criticised us. They were loud and noisy, repeating all sorts of allegations they had plucked out from the Internet.
“Yes, these sort of angry and fiery outbursts had drawn the crowd, but so far, in what way will the rakyat benefit from these speeches?
“The DAP leaders have no concrete plans on how they want to help the people, what they intend to do for the rakyat or how they can make Miri or Sarawak a better place.
“We in SUPP have announced plans for construction of schools and have already built many new schools.
“This state election is not about Taib or mef. It is about how and what a contesting party wants to do for the rakyat. So far, there has been nothing at all coming from DAP,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Dr Chan said that while the DAP leaders were screaming in public, the SUPP leaders had been going around explaining to small groups of people how they were going to resolve the problems the rakyat faced.
“If the DAP leaders are so angry with Taib, why are they afraid to field a candidate against him in Balingain?
“Even Baru Bian, who has been criticising Taib all the time dares not contest in Balingain,” he added.
